Estimated dispatch from Wellington: late October–early November 2026.A practical introduction to experimental materials and material thinking.
The Marvelous Materials book introduces material experimentation through approachable examples and hands-on exploration.
An accessible starting point for young makers, educators and anyone new to biomaterials.
What if eggshells could become ceramics, seaweed could become a hat, or everyday waste could become a new material?
Marvelous Materials: Instructions for Bio-based Experiments is a hands-on introduction to material experimentation from Aalto University. Developed through CHEMARTS and the Aalto University Bioinnovation Center, it brings chemistry, materials science, art and design together through practical experiments using natural, recycled and bio-based ingredients.
Rather than simply explaining sustainable materials, the book invites readers to make, test, observe and discover for themselves. The emphasis is on curiosity: seeing familiar materials differently and understanding how creative experimentation can help us imagine more responsible material futures.
Beginner
The book contains 17 richly illustrated material experiments that can be explored at home, at school or together with others. Projects include experiments such as eggshell ceramics, seaweed-based making and foams made from unexpected everyday materials.
The instructions are designed to make material science tangible: mix, heat, mould, dry, test and see what happens. Along the way, readers encounter ideas from chemistry, materials science and design without needing specialist knowledge or laboratory experience.
Marvelous Materials was created primarily for children and young people aged around 10–15, but it also works well for adults who want an approachable introduction to bio-based materials.
It is particularly suited to teachers, STEAM and design educators, parents, creative workshops, makers and young people interested in science, art or design. It works especially well where learning through making and experimentation is more important than simply following a textbook.

Recipes, methods and inspiration for hands-on material experimentation.
The CHEMARTS Cookbook brings together practical approaches developed through the CHEMARTS programme at Aalto University. It is designed to encourage experimentation across disciplines rather than prescribe a single way of working.
A deeper exploration for lecturers, designers, tertiary students and material enthusiasts ready to experiment further.
How can wood and plants become flexible, transparent, printable or entirely unexpected new materials?
The CHEMARTS Cookbook is a practical, inspiring guide to experimenting with wood and plant-based materials. Created through Aalto University’s CHEMARTS collaboration between design and chemical engineering programmes, it brings together material science and creative practice in a format designed for experimentation.
The book explores cellulose fibres, cellulose derivatives, lignin, bark, wood extractives and other plant-based ingredients, moving between scientific understanding and a designerly way of working. The recipes are not presented as finished commercial solutions; they are starting points to test, modify and develop further.
Intermediate-Advanced
The Cookbook moves from material fundamentals to hands-on experimentation. It introduces the basics of wood-based materials and biomass processing, scientific and designerly approaches to material research, practical working methods, tools, ingredients and safety.
The recipe section then explores materials through properties and techniques including hard, soft, flexible and transparent materials; printing; colouring and dyeing; natural fibres; papermaking; and growing materials.
The final sections broaden the perspective through CHEMARTS student experiences and insights from material professionals, making the book as much about ways of thinking and experimenting as it is about following recipes.
The CHEMARTS Cookbook is for people who want to go deeper into experimental biomaterials and material development.
It is particularly relevant to designers, artists, architects, material researchers, educators, tertiary students, makers and creative practitioners, as well as people working across design, science and sustainability. Some experiments can be explored relatively simply, while others are better suited to workshops or laboratory environments, so the book can grow with the reader from first experiments into more advanced material exploration.

The experiments in the Marvelous Materials book and the CHEMARTS Cookbook use only bio-based ingredients.
You can get craft items, such as paper, masking tape, yarn, and colors, from a craft store or well-equipped supermarket. Grocery stores sell starch, baking soda, and food coloring. You can order special materials, such as methyl cellulose, online.
Some ingredients and tools used in the CHEMARTS Cookbook experiments are not easily accessible, and some recipes require close collaboration with a company or research institute. The book offers some instructions for both individuals and institutions on where to source materials.
Marvelous Materials: To experiment with materials, you need a place to work where there is space to try things out and where you do not need to worry about making a mess. A space at home or in a classroom is suitable, as long as you have a table, stovetop or hotplate, and a tap. Depending on the experiment, you also need various kitchen utensils and tools. The book recommends that you use different equipment for experimenting with materials than you use for cooking food. Although all the ingredients in the book are non-toxic and harmless, always consider safety when you are working. Read more info in the book.
The CHEMARTS Cookbook: The recipes are divided into two categories based on their complexity, recommended working environment and required tools. These categories are: Workshop and Laboratory (see below). The more you explore, the more you may want to try out and it may be worth investing in some more advanced tools and materials. Wherever you work with material experiments, always make sure you use protective gloves and clothing, and that the space in which you are working has proper ventilation. Some recipes in the Workshop category are also suitable for trying out also with school children.
Workshop
It is useful to have a space dedicated for CHEMARTS Cookbook experiments. You need a table, stove or hotplate, and a water tap. Maybe you have access to a specific workshop space or a makerspace in which you can conduct wet experiments. If you decide to work at home, all you need is basic craft or cooking tools, but please note that you should never use the same equipment that you have used for your material explorations afterwards for preparing food. Cover worktops with baking paper or brown paper used in renovations and use an apron to avoid stains. Natural colours, for example, might stain your garments.
Laboratory
For the most advanced recipes in The CHEMARTS Cookbook, you will need access to a professional laboratory. These can be found at schools, universities or other research institutes working in material research. Expertise and equipment vary according to their research focus. To obtain access to these facilities, you may need to participate in a course, set up collaboration with researchers, or become part of a research project. In professional laboratories you can use a broader range of chemicals and access state-of-the-art equipment such as kraft pulp cooking machinery for pulping, or a Masuko grinder for microfibrillar cellulose. Make sure to always follow the instructions provided by the space owner.
